Meagan Humphries, a Texas-bound senior at Castaic High in California and the reigning Nike Indoor Nationals champion and California Winter Outdoor winner in the pentathlon, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in her first career heptathlon as part of the return of the Arcadia Multis on April 5-6 at the 56th Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High in California. Humphries won the pentathlon title Feb. 3 with 3,796 points at the California Winter Outdoor Championships at Arcadia High, then improved that mark to 3,813 points March 10 to secure the crown at Nike Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York. She explains how significant it is to be making her heptathlon debut at Arcadia, and the challenge not only of two days of competition, but her ambition to also pursue back-to-back titles April 6 in the girls invitational triple jump, which Humphries won last year with a 39-9.50 (12.12m) effort. Humphries revisits running a personal-best 2:25.12 in the 800 meters to conclude the pentathlon in New York, and how encouraging that performance was entering Arcadia. She also examines her improvement in the shot put and being able to incorporate that event into her schedule at Foothill League dual meets in March. Humphries speaks about her learning curve with the javelin and being able to surpass 90 feet in her first competition, and how she enjoys new challenges and adding events during this chapter of her career. She analyzes how much has been learned about time management and proper warmup and recovery before and after events, in addition to the importance of fueling and hydrating her body well when competing in the multis or her usual four-event schedule in regular high school meets. Humphries also reflects on how she was able to balance competing in the high jump, long jump, triple jump and 200 meters throughout the California postseason schedule last year, and how motivated she is to win an individual state title May 25 at Buchanan High's Veterans Memorial Stadium, in addition to potentially contending for a team championship by herself. She also expresses gratitude for the support of her family and coaches, along with Castaic High, and how proud Humphries is to have elevated the recognition for an entire athletic department and school. Humphries also looks forward to her future collaboration with Texas head coach Edrick Floreal, along with multis coach Jim Garnham, and how inspired she is by the performances of German decathlete Leo Neugebauer and Latvian heptathlete Kristine Blazevica for the Longhorns.
