The Track and Field team, ranked No. 1 nationally on the women's side and seventh on the men's, is gearing up for the 2014 NCAA West Preliminary Round, which will be held Thursday through Saturday in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Longhorn women have 19 entries in 13 events and the men 25 entries in 14 events. The three-day meet will feature 48 competitors in each individual event, as well as 24 entries in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay squads. The top 12 finishers in each event at both the East and West regions will advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Qualifiers for the Regional: The Longhorns ended the regular season with 31 potential women's qualifiers in 14 events and 28 men's qualifiers in 16 events, but made a number of scratches to enable the athletes to focus on their specialty events. Ashley Spencer qualified in six events and Kendall Baisden five, but each will compete in the 400 meters, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. The Longhorns had seven qualifiers in the 200 meters, but just Morolake Akinosun and Christy Udoh are entered in the prelim. In addition, Nate Moore was scratched from the steeplechase due to injury and Logan Brittain missed out in the high jump on a tiebreaker. Brittain ended the regular season in an 11-way tie for 44th. However, scratches for other teams enabled Basil Fares (100m), John McNamara (1,500m) and Chris Galvin (10,000m) entry into the field. Those three were outside the top 48 on the final men's west qualifying list. Read the full article at: www.texassports.com
